RIP JD Salinger
The author of the novel that changed my life most significantly died today. JD Salinger, a brilliant mind and complete recluse, passed away at the age of 91.
Words cannot describe how profoundly “Catcher in the Rye” affected me in my teenage years. It was required reading in my high school but I read it again and again and again. I realized that I was not alone in my questioning and cynicism. In fact, I remember an old boyfriend remarking to me that I was just like Holden Caufield when I stated that supermarkets were depressing.
Of course I went on to read “Nine Stories” and “Frannie and Zooie” but neither had the lasting effects of “Catcher in the Rye”
“Should a body need a body, coming through the rye?”
Fair thee well Mr. Salinger. We hardly knew you.
